President Trump told a midterm campaign rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, on Saturday that he is weighing a sequel to his Gulf of America renaming, and this time the map he has in mind is a good deal bigger. He said he is thinking about calling the Strait of Hormuz the "Trump Strait," and he floated renaming either the Atlantic or the Pacific the "Trump Ocean" or the "Ocean of the Americas."
The crowd cheered the Hormuz line, according to The Gateway Pundit, which posted video of the remarks and an extended transcript. Just the News carried a short item the same evening pointing readers to the rally clip circulating on X.
Whether the president meant it is the open question. Search summaries of Fox News coverage indicate the network treated the riff as a joke, though we have not reviewed that report in full. Trump himself hedged inside the same breath, saying he would not do it, then saying he was thinking about doing it. No executive order, no Interior Department action and no move by the Board on Geographic Names has been announced.
What He Actually Said
On the strait, Trump tied the idea to American energy output. "We're taking out more barrels of oil right now from the Hormuz Strait — we're thinking about renaming it to the Trump Strait," he said, per the Gateway Pundit transcript. That production claim has not been independently verified.
On the oceans, he kept his options open. "So I was thinking of either the Atlantic or the Pacific. We call it Trump Ocean, or Ocean of the Americas, something like that," he said.
He also said he wants a river renamed, and ruled one out on the spot. "That's too much. Henry Hudson, he did a good job sailing up that sucker a long time ago," he said of the Hudson.
Recalling the Gulf, he said: "I said one day, you know, I think we should name it the Gulf of America, right? And everybody smiled. 'Oh, that's so funny!' I did it, right? It's done." He also claimed Lake Ontario had been renamed Lake America. That assertion rests on Trump's own words in the rally transcript; we have not confirmed any order to that effect, and Lake Ontario is a shared water with Canada, which would not be bound by a unilateral American renaming.
The Part Nobody at the Rally Mentioned
The Strait of Hormuz is not American water. It is an international waterway bordered by Iran and Oman, the passage between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Neither the Gateway Pundit nor Just the News addressed what legal authority a U.S. president would have to rename it, and neither story carried a White House comment.
That is the practical difference between this and the Gulf of America. Washington can direct its own agencies and charts to use a name. It cannot make the International Hydrographic Organization, Ottawa, Tehran or Muscat go along.
The Rest of the Rally
The renaming riff was one stop on a long night. Search summaries of coverage from Fox News and trade-press aggregators say Kid Rock opened the event, a detail we have not confirmed against a full report. Trump touted a Korea Zinc investment he put at more than $6 billion and 740 jobs, figures that likewise come from trade-press summaries and are worth pinning down against the company's own announcement.
Those same previews report that he went after Iran's military, saying the regime has no navy, no air force and no anti-aircraft equipment, and that he used harsh language about its leaders. We have not read the underlying articles in full, and the exact wording should be checked against the rally video.
On firmer ground, per the Gateway Pundit transcript, he took a swipe at Canada, saying it "has been ripping us off for 50 years, charging us massive tariffs." And he worked in the Tennessee ticket, name-checking Sen. Bill Hagerty and Sen. Marsha Blackburn, saying of Blackburn that "she'll come in from the governorship."
What to watch: whether the press secretary treats any of it as a policy signal, whether anything lands at the Board on Geographic Names, and how Ottawa, Tehran and Muscat respond if it does. For now, the only renaming anyone can point to is the Gulf, and the rest is rally material.
