New York's First Lady Animated Dua Lipa's London Festival Film

Rama Duwaji, the artist married to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, made the animation for a campaign film promoting the London Literature Festival, which Dua Lipa is guest-curating this year. According to The New Arab, the film plays on the Piccadilly Lights billboard in London and at the Southbank Centre, the festival's home.

A New York Post piece dated October 31 carries a headline describing her as Mamdani's wife who "leaves US again," a phrase known here only as relayed in secondhand research, not seen verbatim in the full article. That framing suggests Duwaji traveled to London for the project. Patriot Daily Wire was not able to read the Post's full report or confirm when, or whether, she made the trip. No statement from Duwaji, the mayor's office, Lipa or the Southbank Centre about the project or the trip has been found.

What the London Project Is

According to The New Arab, which described Duwaji as a Syrian artist, the campaign film carries words by Lipa and runs under the theme "Read the World Differently." A Getty Images caption cited in that report says artwork by Duwaji featuring Lipa celebrated the opening of the festival at Piccadilly Lights on October 21, 2026.

The text on screen came from Wimmy Road Boyz, the debut novel by Sufiyaan Salam, which won the Merky Books New Writers' Prize. The same excerpt was also featured on Lipa's Service95 platform. Lipa founded the Service95 Book Club.

The New York Post's text was not available, so how it describes the work is unknown. The New Arab describes a campaign film or animation shown on a billboard and on screens.

The Festival

The Southbank Centre lists the 19th London Literature Festival as running from October 20 through November 1, 2026, with Lipa as guest curator. It coincides with the Southbank Centre's 75th anniversary and, per The New Arab, is supported by Bukhman Philanthropies.

What Remains Unanswered

Several basic questions are still open. The Post's word "again" implies an earlier overseas trip, but the details of that trip could not be confirmed. Nor is it known whether Duwaji was paid for the work, whether she was physically in London, or how long she was gone. The New Arab report, as seen through search-result text, does not identify her as Mamdani's wife and does not say where she was when the film debuted.

Forbes profiled Duwaji in October 2025 as someone who lets art speak for her. A separate AOL piece from around the same time, seen only as a search snippet, says she was involved in Mamdani's brand and social media strategy. Neither piece addresses the London project.

What Comes Next

The festival ends November 1. What remains to be seen is whether Mamdani's office will say anything about the project or the travel the Post describes, and whether more details emerge about the earlier trip the paper referenced. Until then, the facts on the record are the artwork and its credit, and not much else.
