A private jet carrying nine people from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas went down in a Palm Beach County, Florida, neighborhood shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday, and everyone aboard died. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the deaths, and the National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation. The cause of the crash is unknown.
The aircraft, a Learjet 60, crashed around 12:50 p.m. Eastern near Military Trail and Cresthaven Boulevard, Just the News reported. According to the FAA, the jet had left Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and was bound for North Eleuthera in the Bahamas.
The jet went down in a residential area on a Sunday afternoon, yet no one on the ground was reported hurt.
A Fireball, a Crater and a Closed Road
The headline and metadata of a Fox News report say the plane crashed and exploded. A county commissioner told local station WPTV the crash left a "massive crater" on Military Trail and warned the road could stay closed longer than first expected. Some secondary reports say the jet struck a tree and brought down power lines. That detail has not been confirmed by investigators.
CBS Miami reported that Military Trail was shut in both directions between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. CBS also reported that about 600 people from a nearby mobile home community were evacuated or relocated, and shelters were opened for them. WPTV reported that the site is being treated as a crime scene during the investigation.
CBS Miami reported that no one on the ground was injured, attributing that to the governor. WFTV reported that Gov. Ron DeSantis spoke about the crash.
Washington Weighs In
Duffy confirmed the deaths, and CBS Miami reported that he did so in a post on X. According to CBS Miami, he wrote: "Please join me in praying for the families and loved ones of those we lost." ABC7 reported that the secretary called the crash a "horrific tragedy."
The NTSB sent a go-team, with investigators expected Sunday and Monday morning. The FAA is assisting.
What Is Still Unknown
There is a good deal nobody has nailed down yet, and it is worth being plain about that.
The cause. Just the News reported that the cause is not clear. Simple Flying says flight tracking showed an extremely steep descent, but no other outlet or agency has confirmed it, and descriptions of the jet nose-diving come from secondary outlets.
The final words from the cockpit. CBS Miami cited air traffic control audio in which the pilot told the tower "We're gonna crash" in a snippet that was cut off, and IBTimes ran a different phrase, "We're Out of Time," in its headline. Neither version has been checked against the recording, and both should be treated as unverified.
Who was aboard. The names of the passengers and crew have not been released in the reports reviewed, and the jet's owner and operator have not been identified.
The Mar-a-Lago angle. Fox's headline refers to Mar-a-Lago, and the Just the News web address does as well. Just the News and Fox put the site about nine miles away, while Simple Flying says about six miles and places it in Greenacres. That is a matter of geography and nothing more. Neither Just the News nor Fox mentions the president being there, and no outlet reviewed says the jet was headed toward Mar-a-Lago or that the property was affected.
What Comes Next
The NTSB typically issues a preliminary report within about 30 days. In the meantime, victim identification is still ahead. Residents of the evacuated mobile home community are waiting to hear when they can return, and Palm Beach County drivers are waiting to learn how long Military Trail will stay closed.
