The man police say took a sledgehammer to the Iwo Jima memorial in Quantico, Virginia, was granted a $2,500 bond. Prince William County Circuit Court Chief Judge Petula Metzler granted it on Monday, Oct. 26, after prosecutors opposed it and the defense argued for it. The suspect, Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano, 27, faces felony charges in an attack that left one of the memorial's figures without its head.
The hearing also brought a second piece of news. WJLA 7News reported that it was disclosed in court Monday morning that Immigration and Customs Enforcement had lodged a detainer against him. Whether he has actually been released is not confirmed.
What Police Say Happened
Officers were called to the memorial near Richmond Highway and Fuller Road at about 10:13 p.m. on Oct. 21. Police say they found Maldonado Soriano striking the monument with a sledgehammer and detained him at the scene. WJLA described him as caught in the act.
According to The Western Journal, in a report by Brooklynn Robinson republished by The Gateway Pundit, the head was removed from one of six Marine figures, and the face and helmet of another were damaged. WJLA reports that one figure was beheaded and another's face was damaged. Police estimate repairs will run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, though that figure comes from police alone.
He is charged with felony destruction of property, trespassing with intent to damage property, and felony injury to a monument. None of the reporting reviewed for this story offers a motive or describes a prior criminal record.
The Immigration Question
The Western Journal piece, citing the New York Post, relayed that unnamed federal sources identify Maldonado Soriano as a Mexican national who entered the country illegally in December 1999. According to that account, he received Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status in 2014 under the Obama administration, with later extensions, most recently under President Biden. The Gateway text available for this story cuts off shortly after that point.
That detail complicates the label attached to him, and his current status is not clear from the available reporting. No statement from the Department of Homeland Security or ICE has surfaced to confirm the federal sources' account. WJLA itself describes him as an illegal immigrant without attribution.
A Bond and a Detainer
The Western Journal headline says the judge ignored the ICE detainer. That is the outlet's framing. Neither report quotes Judge Metzler's reasoning, the conditions of the bond, or what the unnamed defense attorney argued. The Commonwealth's Attorney's office opposed bond, the defense argued for it, and the judge granted it.
A detainer is an ICE request to hold or notify, not a judicial order. How Virginia judges are expected to weigh one at a bond hearing is a question for legal experts, and none are quoted in the reports reviewed here.
A bond grant does not necessarily mean release, because ICE could take custody. As of this writing, there is no report that he has been released, and none that ICE has picked him up.
The bond status has also changed. An X post from Oct. 22 by Eric Daugherty, which cites WUSA9, said he was held without bond. We did not check the WUSA9 report, and the post is opinionated commentary rather than a news source. By Oct. 26, a judge had granted a bond.
What Comes Next
Several questions remain unanswered: whether Maldonado Soriano posts the $2,500, whether ICE takes him into custody, when he is next due in court, and whether the judge, prosecutors, DHS or the Marine Corps will say anything about the case or the repairs. The monument in Quantico remains damaged while those answers are pending.
