Tuesday's midterms were a hard night for Republicans. Breitbart News described the results as bleak for the party and said Democrats "swept." One source close to the White House is already pushing a particular reading of the results: the problem was not immigration. Immigration, the source says, was the part that worked.
The claim came in an exclusive published Nov. 5 by Breitbart News. The unnamed source said President Trump's signature issue "motivated Republican voters to turn out to the polls." The point matters because the post-election argument over what went wrong has already started. According to Breitbart, business and special-interest groups issued statements suggesting immigration was partly to blame, and urged a mass amnesty in the next Democratic-controlled Congress.
Readers should weigh it accordingly. This is one anonymous source in one outlet. Breitbart's headline refers to "sources," but the story quotes only one. No on-the-record statement from the White House or the Department of Homeland Security has surfaced.
The Case the Source Is Making
According to Breitbart, the source credited Stephen Miller and Tom Homan with delivering what the source called the most secure border in American history. The source also said more than 3 million illegal aliens have left the country. No methodology was offered for that figure, and it should be treated as an assertion, not a count.
Breitbart paired that with what it described as an analysis by the Center for Immigration Studies, a group that favors lower immigration, of Census Bureau survey data. As Breitbart tells it, the analysis found the foreign-born population fell by about 2.9 million between January 2025 and July 2026, after rising 8.3 million during the Biden years. The CIS report itself could not be reviewed, so that figure rests on Breitbart's description. It is described as a survey estimate of all foreign-born residents, so it measures something different from the source's departure number.
The source also pointed to CNN's exit polling and said it showed immigration was the top issue for Republican voters and among the top issues for Americans overall. Breitbart linked the poll but printed no figures, and the numbers could not be reviewed. It is also worth saying plainly that Republican voters ranking immigration first is hardly a surprise. On its own, that finding does not explain how the party fared with everyone else.
Looking ahead, the source framed immigration as the GOP's best issue for 2028 and said the administration "will continue to prioritize securing the border, immigration enforcement, rooting out fraud, and restoring law and order." The source also referred to "hoaxes and fake news about ICE," though the story did not specify which controversies were meant.
Who Lost, According to Breitbart
The sharper part of the argument is about specific members, and the results and votes below are as Breitbart reported them. They could not be independently checked. Breitbart said Rep. Maria Salazar's DIGNIDAD Act had 15 Republican allies. Salazar and two co-sponsors won narrowly, and Breitbart counted eight co-sponsors who lost, among them Reps. Mike Lawler of New York and Gabe Evans of Colorado. A linked Breitbart headline put the figure at 10 of 15 removed. The two numbers do not match, and the difference has not been resolved.
Breitbart also reported that Rep. Mike Carey of Ohio, who opposed ending Temporary Protected Status for Haitians and voted with Democrats to extend it, lost. It said Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania also lost, and that he too voted to restore Haitian TPS. Breitbart also linked an April story saying 10 House Republicans joined Democrats to give temporary protection to 350,000 Haitians.
Rep. Mike Turner of Ohio was trailing Democrat Kristina Knickerbocker by fewer than 5,000 votes with about 97.5 percent of the vote counted, based on NBC News results cited by Breitbart. That race had not been called.
What the Argument Leaves Out
The examples are chosen, and Breitbart does not show that these losses were caused by the members' positions on immigration. The story does not address Republicans who took a hard line on the border and lost anyway, and it gives no national seat counts or vote margins. A wave that sweeps out both amnesty backers and enforcement hawks would tell a different story than one that singled out the first group. Until the full results are in, that question stays open.
What Comes Next
Final tallies in Turner's race and other close contests should arrive in the coming days. The fight over amnesty and Temporary Protected Status will move to the new Congress. No on-the-record White House comment has been found so far.
