Salon Says It Is Ceasing Publication After 31 Years, and Old Headlines Resurface

Salon, a left-leaning online outlet founded in 1995, has announced that it is ceasing publication after 31 years. The announcement was dated Nov. 5, 2026, a Thursday.

"Today, after 31 years, we are saddened to announce that Salon is ceasing publication," the company wrote in its goodbye post, which carried no individual byline. The reason it gave was blunt: "our publishing model is no longer sustainable."

Conservatives on X then resurfaced some of Salon's older headlines, and The Gateway Pundit reported on the reaction the next day. Those headlines are unverified, and the details are laid out below.

What Salon Said, and What It Left Out

The goodbye post is notable mostly for its brevity. Salon says it launched in November 1995. The post does not say when the last article will be published, whether the shutdown is immediate or delayed, what happens to the staff, who owns the company, or whether the site's archives will stay online. It also makes no mention of any criticism.

Salon pointed to its publishing model, not to any specific loss of readers. The Gateway Pundit article suggested that Salon's readers "stopped buying" its product. That is the Gateway Pundit's own inference; Salon itself has not said so.

The Headlines Come Back Around

The Gateway Pundit, in a piece published Nov. 6 at 6:40 pm CT under the byline of Michael Schwarz of The Western Journal, reported on the reaction from conservatives online. Its article opened with a line in the author's own voice: "Cue the world's tiniest violin." The article describes Salon as "extreme leftist" and "far-left," which is the Gateway Pundit's characterization, not a finding.

According to that report, users on X posted two older Salon headlines. One, said to date from 2013, reads "The Legend of Zelda" is classist, sexist and racist. The other, said to be from 2015, reads "I'm a pedophile, but not a monster." One X user, according to the report, posted the Zelda headline with the words "Good riddance."

We have not verified either headline against Salon's archive. The Gateway Pundit article did not provide links, archive copies or, in the case of the 2015 piece, a publication date. Readers should treat the exact wording as unconfirmed until it can be checked against the original pages.

The satire site Not the Bee also joined in, according to the same report. It said it would miss Salon as a source for "lunatic left wing nonsense," and named Rolling Stone, CNN and the Associated Press as the sources it would have left. We did not verify that post on the site's own pages.

What We Could Not Review

The Gateway Pundit byline credits The Western Journal. We could not access a Western Journal version of the story, so we cannot say how the two texts compare.

What Comes Next

Several questions remain open. Salon has not given a date for its final shutdown, said whether its archive will remain available to the public, or said what will become of its employees. It is also not yet known whether Salon will respond to the headlines now circulating again on social media. If the archive stays online, the 2013 and 2015 headlines can be checked against the original pages.
