Nearly four years after a first grader shot his teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, the public has finally seen a piece of what the police saw when they walked into Room 11. Roughly three minutes of body-camera video, held under seal because a child appears in it, has been released with the condition that the boy's face be blurred and his name muted.
The Daily Wire, which reviewed the video and credits pilotonline.com for the sealing and unsealing details, reported that The Virginian-Pilot obtained the footage. It shows the 6-year-old restrained on the lap of a school staff member, swearing at the officers around him and telling them the handgun was his mother's and that he took it. The same report says the camera belonged to Officer Brian Torrez, one of several officers and a sheriff's deputy who responded. National write-ups followed on Oct. 7.
The case has never stopped mattering in Virginia, and not only because of the shock value. Teacher Abby Zwerner was shot and spent two weeks in the hospital. No charges were ever brought against the child. The adults around him have been the ones answering for it in court, and by the accounts of both outlets the video was evidence in one of those proceedings before being placed back under seal. Exactly who ordered that, and when, has not been confirmed.
What the Video Shows
According to the Daily Wire's account, the boy is held by a school reading specialist, who told officers she had been down the hall, heard the shot and called 911. On camera the boy tells the officers, "I don't care if you call backup. I don't care if I go to jail, b*tch," and challenges them with a second obscenity-laced line. The staff member can be heard telling him, "Stop. That's not how we speak to each other."
The Gateway Pundit, which also wrote up the footage, transcribes that first line differently than the Daily Wire does. The outlets self-censor the profanity in different places, and the precise wording is best judged from the video itself rather than from either transcription.
The Daily Wire reported additional details that appear in its account alone and have not been independently confirmed here: that the weapon was a 9 mm Taurus handgun left on the classroom floor and guarded by officers until it was secured, that the staff member relayed the boy's claim that the gun held "one bullet" while investigators later found more, that officers were told not to touch his hands because of apparent residue, and that she alleged the boy punched her and knocked off her glasses. The same report says she described the child as being on a modified schedule — "He has been on a modified schedule. His mother is to pick him up at 2:30" — and that it was the first week his mother had not been attending school with him.
Why It Was Sealed
The seal existed because a minor is on camera. Secondary summaries say the video was played in open court as prosecution evidence in the May 2026 trial of former assistant principal Ebony Parker, then sealed again. That trial context, along with the identity of the prosecutor and the specifics of Zwerner's injuries, has not been verified against the court record. Who signed the unsealing order, and when, is likewise not yet confirmed.
What is on the record from 2023 is clear enough. The Newport News commonwealth's attorney concluded the boy would not be charged. His family said through counsel that he has an acute disability and a care plan that called for a parent to be with him at school every day. In April 2023 his mother, Deja Taylor, was charged with felony child neglect and a misdemeanor count for leaving a firearm where it endangered a child.
The Part Nobody Has Answered
The reading specialist told police she had warned the assistant principal about a threat earlier that day, according to both outlets. Whether the adults who were told anything did anything is the question the courts have been left with. Neither outlet reported comment from Zwerner or her attorneys, the city, the Newport News Police Department, the school division or the boy's family.
The next questions are procedural. The unsealing order itself should settle who authorized the release and on what terms, Parker's case status and any sentencing date remain to be confirmed, and the status of any civil litigation by Zwerner is still an open question. The video does not change what happened in January 2023. It makes it harder to look away from.
