An ICE Officer Fires in Marble Hill, and Two Stories Emerge

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and wounded a man around 4 p.m. Thursday during what the Department of Homeland Security calls a targeted enforcement operation in the Marble Hill area, at the seam where Upper Manhattan meets the Bronx mainland. The man was taken to a nearby hospital, conscious and receiving treatment, and the New York Police Department said its officers were not involved and were not at the scene when the shots were fired.

Within hours, two very different accounts of the same afternoon were circulating. DHS described a planned arrest of a Dominican national with a grand larceny conviction, a string of prior arrests and alleged ties to the Trinitarios gang. Mayor Zohran Mamdani, writing on X, said early reports indicated federal agents surrounded the man and a 5-year-old child sitting in his car and then fired several rounds.

Neither version has been independently confirmed. The man has not been publicly identified, and no official account has yet explained what triggered the shots.

What DHS Says Happened

In a statement provided to FOX 5 New York, DHS said the operation was aimed at arresting a Dominican national in the Bronx at approximately 4:00 p.m. Eastern. The department said the man had a prior conviction for grand larceny and prior arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession and weapons possession, and alleged associations with the Trinitarios.

DHS also said the man was arrested by the NYPD on Dec. 7, 2023, and released days later under the city's sanctuary policies.

On the shooting itself, the department's language was brief.

"During the incident, an ICE officer discharged his weapon and the criminal illegal alien was injured."

DHS added that "ICE officers immediately rendered aid. The individual is alive and at a local hospital," and said the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations were on scene with the incident under investigation. Every element of the man's alleged record and release comes from DHS alone and remains unverified.

What City and State Officials Say

Mamdani's response was the sharpest. In his post on X, the mayor wrote: "Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children." FOX 5 reported that the child is believed to be unharmed. The account of agents surrounding the car, including the child's age, is sourced to the mayor's description of early reports and has not been confirmed by the NYPD or DHS. Mamdani also said he called President Trump to demand an end to ICE enforcement operations in New York City; whether that call took place has not been confirmed.

Gov. Kathy Hochul posted that New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened, a demand for a federal accounting that stops well short of the mayor's abolition language. City Council Member Tiffany Cabán issued a written statement saying, "I am heartbroken and furious that ICE have shot one of our beloved neighbors yet again."

Fox News, citing the NYPD's post on X, reported that one person was shot and hospitalized in conscious condition and that department officers played no role in the shooting. FOX 5 New York, which obtained the DHS statement, reported that the catalyst for the shooting remains unclear.

The Facts Still Missing

A good deal of what the public would want to know is not yet established. The number of rounds fired is unknown. Whether more than one officer discharged a weapon is unknown. The wounded man's name, condition and prognosis have not been released. Whether there is bodycam or bystander video has not been said.

Even the geography is being reported two ways. Marble Hill is legally part of Manhattan but sits attached to the Bronx mainland, which is why the NYPD and Fox News placed the shooting in the Bronx while FOX 5 datelined it Upper Manhattan. Fox News published a scene image tagged at Marble Hill Avenue and West 225th Street.

That ambiguity is a reminder worth keeping in mind over the next several days: the loudest statements arrived within two hours of the shots, and the investigative record arrives on a much slower clock.

What Happens Next

The FBI and HSI are working the scene, and an internal ICE review of the shooting would be the expected next step. DHS says more information is coming. The things to watch are concrete — the wounded man's identity and condition, any video, a federal account of what prompted the officer to fire, and whether Hochul's demand for answers produces a public federal explanation rather than another round of dueling posts.
